As taught in project management professional certification training, the Work Breakdown Structure is the basis of a project. WBS offers many benefits that will make it easier for project team members to work throughout the project’s life cycle. It makes it easier to manage, coordinate, monitor, and estimate the project. How is this possible? WBS Project Management divides project deliverables into smaller, more manageable parts.

As you can see in all online PMP courses the WBS levels are branched in an hierarchical manner. These WBS levels correspond with different terms. We will be discussing these terms and how they relate to the WBS levels.

What are the 4 WBS Levels
The project title is the first and highest WBS Level. The project’s overall scope will be complete at the end. Therefore, all project work and deliverables will be included in the project.
The Control Accounts are the second level of the WBS Levels. Control accounts are the major parts, systems and phases of a project’s deliverables. For example, Database System can be the control level in the WBS Levels for a software project.
Work Packages is the third level of the WBS. Control accounts are made up of work packages. For example, the database system control account may have work packages that include a software application, servers, data structures, etc.

Work packages within a WBS need to be manageable, coordinated, executed, and monitored. This is the main purpose of creating a WBS. These work packages are only a small portion of a WBS that can be delivered to the customer. They must be explained to all project stakeholders. Work Breakdown Structure Dictionary can be used to explain work packages in greater detail. Work packages only contain the name of the deliverable and nouns. WBS dictionary explains in detail what must be delivered.
Activities is the last level of WBS. Activities are tasks that project team members must complete to complete the work package. Here are some examples of activities for the server or software application work package.
Install database software
Configure database software
Integrate database server and other network components

Scope Management is a key part of the Create WBS process. WBS is a snapshot of the project deliverables that will be completed during the project. It shows the hierarchy of project deliverables and project work. To ensure smooth project management, it is impossible to complete a project as a whole. All work and deliverables must be organized in a hierarchy. These WBS levels are extremely helpful for project managers and project team members.
